FLOWSTONE
|

 |
HOW DOES IT FORM?
Flowstone is formed by calcite deposted by water running over rocks, other formations and down the walls of caves.
WHERE IS IT FOUND?
Flowstone is found anywhere in a cave where water can flow over rock. It is a fairly common formation and many examples can be found in all of our caves. The top photo was taken at Black Chasm Cave and the bottom photo at California Cave.
HOW IS IT IDENTIFIED?
Flowstone looks like rock that has flowed down like a liquid, and is often described as a frozen waterfall. It can be pure white or it can have a reddish brown color depending on the minerals present.
