Examining Humdity: Grades K-4

Examining Humidity: Grades 5-8
MATERIALS
2 equal-sized clear bowls
Plastic wrap
Straight pin
Measuring cup
Measuring spoons
Water
PROCEDURE
Place bowls side-by-side in an area away from direct sunlight. Fill each with the same amount of water using the measuring cup. Make note of the amount of water used. Mark the waterline on each bowl.
Cover one bowl tightly with plastic wrap then using a straight pin, puncture 4 small holes in the top. This bowl will represent the enclosed nature of a cavern. The second, uncovered bowl will represent water on the surface.
Throughout one week, observe the bowls and note any changes.
On day 5 pour the water from one bowl into the measuring cup and make note of the amount. For added emphasis, you can use measuring spoons of water to add to the

INSTRUCTIONS
This humidity experiment will show why the cavern environment is more humid (moist) than the surface environment. The covered bowl will represent the enclosed cave environment, while the uncovered bowl will represent the surface environment.

Repeat this process with the second bowl.
Next time you visit a cave, you will probably be noticing the humid environment and understanding why it's more humid than the surface environment we are all so familiar with.
